History of the Rottweiler

Although there is know recorded origin of the Rottweiler, there is plenty that we do know about the breed through history. It is believed that Rottweilers are descended from the drover dogs that were used by the ancient Romans to herd and guard cattle. Because the soldiers could not travel with meat in those days, as it would spoil, they traveled with their cattle to be killed as needed. The Rottweilers dark colors were developed so they would be difficult for their enemies to see at night. In 74 AD Roman troops, with their drover dogs, crossed the Alps and ended on the banks of the Neckar River in what is now southern Germany. As the troops settled, the drover dogs continued to be of use in guarding the herds.

Throughout the centuries, the popularity of the Rottweiler has greatly fluctuated. During the 12th century the town of Rottweil Germany was being developed with very elaborate fortifications being built. With the increase in security came the increase in the commerce of cattle. From there came the increase in butchers, all which led to the increase of the Rottweiler commonly referred to in those days as the Butchers dog.
In the 19th century the droving of cattle was outlawed by the local government.  As it was in those days, if a dog could not earn his keep, there was no need for the dog. The Rottweiler began to dramatically decrease. In the years between 1901 and 1907 the breed became very favorable among police. This was due to the Rottweiler’s powerful build, hard bite and good tracking ability. In 1910 the Rottweiler was officially recognized by the German Police Dog Association as a police dog breed, once again giving the Rottweiler a purpose.
Today the Rottweiler still serves as a police dog, military dog, and family companion.
